I got HughesNet when my cable internet became unreliable due to weak signals. But HughesNet is not an acceptable alternative. The problem seems to be a basic one related to the time it takes a signal to make a round trip to the satellite. The actual data transfer speed seems to be close to what is advertised, but getting connected to a web site can take up to a minute as the handshaking back and forth to the satellite tries to make the connection.
I've seen many posted complaints about the data transfer limit, but I fear all internet providers are moving in this direction.
And, of course, we all agree on the technical support. I've gotten pretty good at understanding the heavy Indian accents, but the scripted responses and repeated requests for me to reboot everything gets so tiring I don't call anymore.
I am awaiting the switch to fiber optics telephone "wires" so we can all go to DSL. Currently after many false attempts, I was finally and definitively told that my house is 50 feet too far from the telephone central office.

1. Written by Howard Hughes, on 19-09-2009 03:58 Hughes.net speeds are below 100kbps on downloads and web browsing is the same a 5kbps land line. They advertise 700kbps but cant direct me to one web site that I can download at 200kbps. There tech support reads off bingo cards and is no help if could understand them.
2. Written by Mike, on 13-11-2008 04:59 I have had Hughes for several years and have upgraded the satellite modem each time a newer on is available. I also think the speed is getting slower. I suspect more consumers useing the system is taking the toll. If you have any alternatives (other than dial-up) use it. My friends have cable, and as much as they complain, none have to deal with how s-l-o-w Hughes is. The Indian tech support ***, but I have the "home office" version, so eventually I get handed over to folks who speak English. Eventually.
3. Written by Karen, on 08-10-2008 11:42 I also have Hughesnet and am disappointed that this company is my only alternative for broadband in my neighborhood. It is very slow and certainly costs way too much for the amount of speed I get. Lately it has felt even slower than usual and it is just making me despise this company even more. I would not recommend them to anyone if you have an alternative. Its frustrating for me because I have a 2 year contract with them. I will be writing letters to the other local broadband companies to please provide their services in my neighborhood. I hope to get DSL in the future.
