So Slow

I have three and half more months and I can get rid of Hughes Net Internet. It is expensive compared to what I had before. A lot more. I can't even watch YouTube videos because it is so slow and keeps reloading. I am going to celebrate when my contract is up in three and half months.

Exhorbitant

Hughesnet is not cheap, but I could live with it except for the miserly 30Gigs of download per month limit. Once 30G is used, downloading slows to a crawl, or you'll be forced to buy "tokens" at $3/Gig.

It is true that between the hours of 2am and 8am you can access an extra 50G/month at no extra charge, but many applications make it impossible to use this unless you are willing to stay awake into the small hours and then launch your app.

30Gigs might sound adequate, but these days it is not. Our dear friends at Microsoft are busy chewing up your bandwidth with one huge, bug-ridden patch after another. If you run a VM you'll have downloads of both the host OS and the VM. If you run dropbox, and a collaborator innocently posts dozens of photos all of your 30G will evaporate in the snap of a finger.

All of this happens because in many areas Hughesnet is the only choice. I blame regulators for allowing this monopoly. The major players in fibre optic cable should be required to provide service in rural areas, not just high margin urban.

Hughes Network System...Rip Off Artists!!!!!!!!!!

They have the worst service possible!! I'm not exactly sure how a company can get away with Charging for a Service that They Are Supposed To Be Providing...Collect their money every month but not care that their customers don't have a Service That Works!! We ( Unwillingly ) have been Customers of Hughes Net for 11 months now...paying around $75 JUST FOR Internet Service....Service That NEVER WORKS!!! We call Hughes Net 1-2 times a month to complain because we have to just use our data from our cellphone plan because the Internet Never Works! They are always saying " Let us try this...call us back in a day or 2 to let us know if its working any better!" this continues for months... They even cover our bill for 2 months... then what we think is the last time we are told "If this doesn't work...we will cut the Cancellation fee in half down to $150.00 and let you out of your contract!" Of course it doesn't work...We let them know...We get a Final Bill For $55 and last week we receive the box to send the modem and stuff back! Today we get a call from a Collection Agency....Hughes Net $600.00....So, Back On The Phone With Hughes Net....They are now saying there is no notes of half of our call, this that and 12 other things!! This letter that came in the box to send the modem back says if this isn't handled within 45 days we will be charged.. this, that and 12 other things.....SOOOO...How Are We In Collections Already??? $75 a month for 9 months for Service you cant use is Ridiculous Already!! (I say 9 months because they paid 2 months of the 11 months we have had service with them!) All we have wanted Is Out Of Our Contract and Have Been Harassed For Months By This Worthless Company...Their (Pretend) Services FORCED Down Our Throats...Along With All Their Lies!!!

Glad you posted this. Already getting ripped off by rise and WAS considering HughesNet.

BUT, they won’t allow a test perio insisting on a three year contract. Problem is, as described so well, it’s a one sided contract. They have deep pockets and can afford lawyers when most of us can’t afford it.

Keep reporting them to the BBB and maybe it will be fixed... Not!!

Only verbal cancellations. WRONG

They are giving me the run around. I care for my father and handle his finances. The account is set up online so that I can’t change my payment method by credit card without putting in a new valid account to charge!! At first I called to cancel but they wouldn’t take my word as I have a power of attorney. They wanted me to fax it to them. CRAZY! No way ... So I sent them a notice by email to close my account directing that they send any residual future bills to my fathers address and to NOT charge his card. They just respond saying they want to talk to someone. They don’t cancel with email. My father is 89 years old and shouldn’t have to deal with these crooks. When they attempt to charge his Discover card I hope to get Discover to intervene since I have the emails to validate a dispute. The contract limit how you communicate. I can’t believe how they can stay in business. They bait and hook you. The data limits are a joke. Buy a token to get more data? My other option is to complain to Direct TV since they referred us to them because no other providers service the remote area he lives in. From what I am reading they need to be sued class action style.

Bait and switch

I have never publicly bashed a company on social media but I am so mad that I feel this is the only way. We were workamping in a canyon with out cell phone service or TV service so we decided to get satellite internet to stay in touch with the world. Hughesnet was our ONLY option. After having the service for 1 year we found out our installer (the guy who represented the company and installed our system) mislead us with the terms of the contract. We had been calling him often for the last month without getting a return phone call. We called the customer service number for Hughesnet and that is when we learned that our contract was not what we thought. We also learned how we were supposed to get their equipment back to them (involved them mailing a box to us). Since we would be leaving our location and traveling for the next 6 months and not have a mailing address to receive a box we desperately tried to reach our installer by phone - calling every day for the last 4 days we were in his area. He told us he would come by the campground and pick up our equipment. Just like NOT returning phone calls he did NOT show up before we left on Monday morning. The end result of this mess is costing us OVER $300! This is in addition to the outrageous monthly fees they charge for their extremely slow internet. The company says the "installer" is a 3rd party and doesn't represent them. He sure seemed to represent them when he sold us our system! What they are saying is that because he is just a 3rd party anything he said to us about billing, fees, services, etc. doesn't mean anything. So BEWARE of Hughesnet and make sure you get contract information from the people you are paying and not the people selling to you!

They gave me good service though, because the time it was installed in my site, I called them to know what is right or wrong. Not to call them after a year?

You kidding me?

Call the company, NOT just who represents it. If you need to talk to the CEO, why not.

Terrible streaming and speeed

Whatever, whatever you do, do not subscribe to HughesNet! Let me tell you about my experience, which I'm seeing repeated all over the internet. I thought I would subscribe because they were new to my neighborhood and I would save a little money. I purposefully asked if I would be able to stream movies and videos and was told absolutely yes, and so went ahead with the install and lengthy service contract. Well, the install tech was friendly enough, but when we went to try it out, it buffered my movies considerably. I asked about that and was told "you just have to wait for it to download it for a minute". Well, I stupidly let it go, and alone, I continued to try to watch my movies. I timed it and it buffered every 15 seconds. Even my tablet would buffer trying to download videos and music. I ended up calling their technical service 3 times within the first few days. Every time, I would get an overseas operator who would test and fiddle with something on their end, and then tell me to go to their website and change some settings. Nothing worked, not a whit. I told them I wanted to cancel after just those few days and was told there was a cancellation fee of $400 for the first 2 years. I guess I knew that but thought I would never need to do that when I signed up. Well, here's what I did. I knew their monthly charge would be coming up soon, so I went to my bank and changed some banking information and had them blocked. Haha on them! Soon I got past due notices, and then more threatening letters. Ultimately I got a box asking for a return for all of their equipment. They even wanted me to go up to the roof and retrieve their transmitter! Heck if I was going to do that. I even read a review where they were asking an 80 year-old man to do the same. Well, today I am going to UPS to mail their box with just what I was able to throw in it. I hope that's the end of this mess!

Awful Internet Service

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

Don't believe the Hughes Net commerial lies. From the first day they installed their internet service in our home it was the worst internet service we ever had.

And thats including dial up. The service man had to come back in our home twice to try and fix problems with it . Luckily we caught him before he left our driveway. Making excuses from the start to try and assure us about the problems.

Then it went from bad to worse because within the next week of service we stayed on the phone with the service center trying to solve our problem with their internet service. Needless to say we were without service more than with. Finally the service center told us we had to pay even if it was worthless (my word). And they would put it on hold until October.

Well even that was a lie because they starting taking ninety dollars a month out of our account in August.

And we went back to our local service the first month of Hughes Net installation. So warning to any and all consumers, Hughes Net is unreliable, terrible service and full of untruths and practices (IF NOT ILLEAL)' unjust bussiness practices.

Overcharged for 30 months, offered refund for 6 of those months

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
In Sep 2015, I signed up for Internet with HughesNet. Today, sadly I didn't catch it earlier, I noticed I was being overcharged. When I called the billing dept., I was told a variety of stories as to why the amount I pay each month is twice what I was quoted on the phone and the order email I received. First, I was told I was on a different plan than what I ordered. Then I was told that there was a different promotion than the email reflected. I was told I had accidentally changed my plan. I was told that I have used the full amount of data allowed each month, even though the location where Internet was set-up was a house that sat empty for 355+ days in 2017. I was also told that the additional amount was for a package deal. I get Internet only. Every time The customer service agent came onto the phone, he alway had a reason for the overcharge, but it never made any sense -- how can I accidentally upgrade my service without knowing? I asked for The customer service agent’s name and badge number, and he gave me he name, and a case number rather than badge number. Then I asked to speak with a supervisor, suddenly The customer service agent was able to speak with the advanced billing department. He said that the 3 month overcharge refund was all that the advanced billing could authenticate as to my overcharges and they could not look further back into the account to verify payments. I am on automatic payment, is the company so technologically inept that they cannot see what a customer has paid over the years? We are speaking of 30 months if overcharge, not a few months. The customer service agent said to process any kind of refund, I would have to fax my original email to Hughes Net. When I said I don’t have fax service at my house, only Internet and I could forward the email to him, he said it had to be faxed. “The reason that the advanced billing department gave for the $214.05 refund, is that all the further back they can process a refund.” I asked his to ask the billing department what the policy actually is that says it is okay to overcharge a customer by about $2000 and it is okay to keep 1800 of it. He went back to advanced billing to speak with the advanced billing department. When he returned to the phone, he said that the advanced billing department could process a refund for 6 months only. “He said that a customer must report the issue with the bill as early as possible for them to process changes or full refund on the account.” I pointed out that the story changed again. He suggested instead of filing with the local, federal, state, and BBB offices I just post the info on HughesNet website. At this point, I asked to speak with The customer service agent’s supervisor. I was on placed on hold. I asked my husband to bet on the fact that The customer service agent would be back on the line and say that advanced billing could authorize 12 months refund. While waiting, I looked up Hughes Network Corporate Offices so I can call on the next business day. The customer service agent keeps coming back to the call to report that the advanced billing department is doing further research, but each time he comes back to me, another person in that advanced billing department is on the phone and he has to speak to them again. I told The customer service agent to stay with on the phone call with the advanced billing department so that he can get an answer rather than checking that I am still on the line. The supervisor came on the line. He gave me three reasons that there was an upgrade made to my account by 1) I was told that their assumption that a call was made by myself or on my behalf to make an upgrade, or 2) I or someone else went to the website and change on the internet, or 3) the fault was on their end that call was not documented and someone at Hughes Net had mistakenly upgraded account. He again said that the company could offer me a 6 month refund of $430 and that he would send corporate an email so an investigation would be conducted to see how the change to my account was made. I pointed out that there was still an overpayment of 24 months and thenI told The supervisor I had the number for corporate and would call on Monday and I would request a transcript of the 2+ hour call from today. Customers – know who and where to report your Internet trouble to. BBB, FCC, Attorney General of your state, local utilities commission, state utilities commission, your senate, state delegate, and congressman.

New Hughesnet Scam!!

I wanted to warn you all that Hughesnet has a BRAND NEW scam! I like many many people, suffered out a 2 year contract, after trying repeatedly to cancel (after repeatedly trying to fix, with what they jokingly call customer service ) Sooooo they tap my account for 2 YEARS while never giving me a product that was of Any Practical Use! I run the time out by two extra months, before I notice that they are still charging me. I call My bank - Who are very nice and tell me, of course they'll stop any new payment . HOWEVER, the next month when Hughesnet tries again to bill me as Hughesnet.com , and the bank stops them, they resubmit as just HUGHESNET, no .com this time, and IT GOES THRU!! I call the bank again. They tell me it won't happen again, after this time, (but, at least they reimburse me for the previous payout) and they will now block payment to HUGHESNET (no dot com) I say "that's great but what if they do this again?" The sweet girl, who really wanted me off the phone by now, says "na ,they won't do that, this should take care of it" .

This month they tried again Now As - HMS Hughesnet.com! IT WENT THRU AGAIN! I called the bank Again, was transferred to the Fraud department. After, much run-around it seems they can do NOTHING.

I called the Attorney General to start a fraud complaint.

I'm on my way to the bank to close my account.

Check Your Bills Carefully!

Hughesnet are out and out criminals!

Hughes Net LIES!

So we fell for the "GET INTERNET IN YOUR COMMUNITY"! No data limits blah blah blah. I never thought anything could be worse than ATT non digital basic dial up in BFE! Hughes NET should have a class action lawsuit filed against them for their LIES. So you sign up... all promises are false! You think you'll get internet; it's so bad we tried to cancel in less than a week. Luckily we kept our *** non digital dsl by att or we'd have ZERO internet. So now I pay more than 200 dollars a month for crap internet service and there is NO cancellation. I am writing this in hopes of saving someone else from this fate! I am cancelling this *** and paying a HUGE fine to cancel! I will be reviewing their sorry selves all over the internet!

Satellite phone service is a nightmare!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We switched over to Hughes Net because Centurylink was out for days at a time on a monthly basis. We don't even use our home phone line a lot and at least 3-4 calls a day drop or don't go through at all. Hughes customer service advises us to write down call times but that is ridiculous because it's been happening for over 2 years now. We are waiting patiently for Spectrum to branch out from just 1/4 mile away and we will happily take our internet and phone service to them. We have no gripe with the Gen 5 internet service at all, but the phone service is absolutely unacceptable.
